Start with the exact URL

Archive systems identify pages primarily by address. Paste the complete article URL, including its path, rather than searching only for the publication homepage.

Try the newest snapshot first

The most recent capture is usually the closest match to the article readers originally saw. If scripts or images are broken, an older capture may render better.

Use the capture calendar

The Wayback calendar shows snapshots by date. This is especially helpful for pages that were updated, corrected, moved, or replaced.

Search for alternate copies

News organizations often syndicate reporting. Exact-URL and headline searches may locate a public partner publication, author copy, quotation, or follow-up covering the same facts.

Understand the limits

Archives are incomplete. Robots directives, login requirements, technical failures, and removal requests can prevent captures or make them unusable.
